Anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of kindness knows just how powerful it can be — particularly when we’re struggling through a personal challenge. The very act of receiving a kindness helps us want to share that kindness with others in the ultimate display of paying it forward.

If making the world a better place through being kind isn’t motivation enough, researchers have also found that it has more tangible benefits. Being kind can make us feel more connected to others, helps us feel less stressed and depressed, decreases pain, increases pleasure, and contributes to a sense of happiness and well-being. Both for the giver and recipient, kindness can be powerful.

But it isn’t always easy to be kind. We can get so caught up in our own struggles that we allow ourselves to take out our frustration on others.
