What Can We Learn By Giving of Ourselves?

Learning through giving

Charity is a big part of our society and giving of yourself is an important lesson for us all. Why is altruism such an important aspect of living a spiritual life? What can we learn as we give of ourselves? While there are as many answers as there are people, there are several powerful benefits to giving of yourself. First, though, let’s look closer at what “giving of yourself” means.

Defining “Giving of Yourself”

Giving of yourself is no small thing, but the acts you do to help others can be as little as a small, kind gesture. Giving of yourself simply means making an effort to help others.

It can be volunteering, doing charity work, donating money, or a random act of kindness. You can give of yourself daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly, depending on your own needs and day-to-day limitations. Because giving of yourself is such a broad category, everyone can find some way to selflessly help others and each type of act offers its own unique lessons and benefits.

Strengthen Community with Charity

Volunteering for a charity event is a great way to give back to the community and strengthen your bonds with your neighbors. Fostering fellowship and working alongside the people in your community can offer insights into what your community most needs which then promotes continued growth as you strive to solve problems and create a better narrative for your area. It’s a cycle of improvement!

Better Your Well-Being

Altruism has a way of revitalizing our souls and promoting a better state of well being. By giving of yourself, you can also give back to yourself in the form of spiritual nourishment. Helping others positively affects our brains so that we feel happier, deal with stress better, and can help reduce feelings of loneliness.

Increase Your Sense of Gratitude

On top of the health benefits altruistic acts offer, you can also benefit because helping those in need keeps things in perspective and can remind you to be thankful for what you have. Gratitude and humility are side effects of acting selflessly — and we could all use a dose of that from time to time.

Lift Up Goodness by Helping Others

While dedicating your life to spiritual growth and even teaching others by example are excellent starting points, giving of yourself can also show God that you’re thankful for His many blessings. By helping others, you set an example of what goodness truly is.

Giving of yourself can be anything. Disabled and can’t be present? Limited by responsibilities or money? There may still be ways you can give your time or your knowledge… because your personal experience offers many beneficial lessons that can impact the community and the world. You, your time and the space you take up, no matter your abilities, are unique and worth something.
